RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CHEMIST

General Description

The Chemist is responsible for developing new compounds and processes for a variety of markets and applications.  This individual will conduct chemical testing on raw material chemicals and finished products.  The Chemist will help support the maintenance of all raw material specifications, mixing procedures, formulations, an approved supplier list, and lab procedures.  This position reports to the Global R&D Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs rheological, mechanical and chemical tests on rubber materials per standard test methods such as ASTM using a viscometer, rheometer, particle size analyzer, age oven, tensile tester, TGA, DSC, FTIR, etc.
  • Assists in the design and development of rubber compounds for various applications in coordination with the
  • R & D Manager.
  • Plans and conducts development production tests/trials in coordination with production and planning.
  • Analyzes and interprets test data and prepares technical reports.
  • Compounds experimental materials using lab scale internal mixer, laboratory mills etc.
  • Performs operational checks and maintains lab equipment.
  • Follows safety procedures and good laboratory practices.
  • Troubleshoots raw materials, compounds and provides plant technical support.
  • Performs any and all other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in polymer science and rubber technology.
  • Five years’ experience in research and development in a manufacturing setting.

  • Must be able to travel as necessary.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.    

Physical demands

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift objects of up to 25 lbs.
